The sprint to LA28 is one step closer after the competition schedule was officially announced on Wednesday. The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will begin with the opening ceremony on July 14, and the closing ceremony is set for July 30. The 2028 Olympic Games will feature 36 sports and 51 disciplines.

LA28 will be groundbreaking for female Olympians, in particular; for the first time, 50.5% of the 11,200 athletes in 51 sports across 49 venues are women.

This year, Olympic and Sports Federation officials flipped the track and field and swimming events after carefully considering the schedules. Day 1 of the Games will feature the most women ever competing in a final, starting with the 100-meter dash. Women must run three 100-meter heats in one day.

"We want to come out in these Games with a bang. We want to start Day 1 with a showcase of the fastest females in the world," LA28 Chief of Sport Shana Ferguson said. "We're kicking off the athletic competition with one of the marquee events for women athletes."

The following week, swimming events will take place, giving athletes a chance to enjoy the opening ceremony instead of training to compete the next morning. Swimming will take place in SoFi Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Rams.

One of the most anticipated days of the Olympic Games will be "Super Saturday" on July 29. The stacked card will include 26 finals sessions in 23 sports such as basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, cricket, golf, football, swimming and tennis. There will be plenty on the line with 15 gold and bronze medal team matches and finals in 15 individual sports that day.

Baseball, softball, cricket and lacrosse are also set to return to the Olympic lineup. The baseball matchups will start on July 13, a day ahead of the opening ceremony, and take place at the home of the back-to-back World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lacrosse was an official medal sport in the Olympics in 1908. It was a demonstration sport in 1928, 1932 and 1948. Cricket will return to the Olympics for the first time in 128 years.

American flag football and squash will make their Olympic debuts on July 15. Details for the scheduling of American flag football and the Los Angeles Paralympics will be announced at a later date.

The last swimming champion and the women's and men's marathons will conclude the Olympics before the closing ceremony.

About 14 million tickets will be available for purchase with no dynamic pricing. Ticket registration will begin this January.
